iOS9 – What you need to know.

A new version of iOS. iOS9 was released on the 16th of September. What are the highlights of this new version and how it’s going to affect you?

ios9-featuredWHO CAN UPGRADE?

If you have an iPhone 4S or original iPad mini then your device is compatible.  However, some of the niftiest new features will only work on the more recent devices.

WHAT’S BETTER?

Some of the most beneficial improvements aren’t as apparent as others.  Largely speaking, new iOS versions have made older devices a bit slower.  That should be improved with iOS9 and should speed up the oldest compatible devices.

Updates are also being improved, downloads are smaller and require less space on the device, a real help if you have a 16GB device.

Battery life is improved across all devices, giving an extra hour and a low power mode has been added to eek out a bit more time when your battery gets very low (yes, Android’s had that forever).

All the apps get improved versions and are more useful, particularly the Notes app, which you might consider using more now!  Siri is apparently smarter, but I bet it still can’t get my Scottish accent right.

The big change is multi-tasking, it is vastly improved and very easy to use.  It has three main features, but you don’t get all of these unless you have the latest iPad’s:

  • Slide Over – You can “slide” a second app onto the screen, pretty handy to quickly respond to a message without hiding your main app.
  • Split View – With Split View, you can go a step further and have two apps open and active at the same time.  Basically side by side apps that you can drag either way.
  • Picture in Picture – While using FaceTime or watching a video, press the Home button and your video screen scales down to a corner of your display. Tap to open a second app, and your video continues to play.

SHOULD I UPGRADE?

Yes, it’s not an upgrade that is so vastly different that you won’t know how to use it. Your apps are still going to work, but expect heaps of app updates coming through for a while.  Everything is just a bit better, more usable and more secure.  Just remember to back it up first!  If you need help or advice, give us a call on 1300 991 351!
